Dimitar Berbatov back at White Hart Lane in a Spurs shirt? Surely not?
While the football world debates the pro’s and con’s of Andy Carroll’s potential move back from Liverpool to Newcastle, an equally surprising comeback could yet just happen.
Carroll cost an inflated £35 million and Liverpool want to sell him for £20 million. Meanwhile by comparison Tottenham sold Dimitar Berbatov to Manchester United for £30 million, and now have an opportunity to buy him back for just £5 million.
The player has made it clear he wants to leave Old Trafford, resorting to posting on his official Facebook page of his frustration at not being able to secure a move away to date.
He has been linked with moves to clubs in the Bundesliga, along with Malaga, but this week it has been the unlikely duo of West Ham and AC Milan who have registered an interest in the attacker.
So why not Tottenham? After all, the club was where Berbatov spent two of the best seasons of his career, scoring a combined 46 goals in two seasons.
On the face of it, the move could work. Spurs need strikers, they have just Jermain Defoe available at present, and a move for Emmanuel Adebayor still has not been sealed, with news reported this week that Lokomotiv Moscow are ready to enter the bidding for the striker.
Berbatov knows the club, the set up, and even Defoe who he once partnered in attack. However the big question mark is how he would fit into manager Andre Villas-Boas’ plans.
Some see him as too slow for the attacking brand of football AVB wants to develop, but it could be argued his intelligence and technique simply present an alternative option.
The manager has yet to register an interest in him, but that does not mean it is out of the question. Spurs have been linked with several strikers this transfer window already; Hulk, Leandro Damiao, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, and Loic Remy.
If either of them were signed, they would automatically become Tottenham’s first choice. Berbatov is 31, and would find himself a squad striker at Spurs, but would surely play far more than the five league starts he made last season.
Tottenham’s strike force is likely to be Defoe – Adebayor – and one other star name to lead the attack, plus possibly young Harry Kane. However if the Adebayor deal, a cut-price one at that, does not work out, then Berbatov is an equally talented cheap option.
This would be where he fits in. Don’t expect Spurs to go for Berbatov as things stand right now, but if the Adebayor deal does fall through, the club will be short of finishers and Berbatov may come to the fore.
