Rangers face a tough task to close the gap with Celtic next season and if they are to do so they need to sign a prolific striker.

Veteran Kenny Miller was the only player to reach double figures in the league last season, scoring 11. By contrast Celtic had four players above 10, with star man Moussa Dembele scoring 17 league goals.

Rangers have been active in the transfer market, signing Mexican forward Eduardo Herrera and Benfica B attacker Dalcio, but both of their goal records are uninspiring.

Yesterday Rangers were touted as suitors for exciting Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi by The Mirror, but it appears this over ambitious plan was a red herring.

Instead they appear set to move for Colombian forward Alfredo Morelos, who has been scoring for fun in Finland.

The Scottish Sun report a £1 million fee has been agreed for the striker, who has scored 21 goals in his last 25 appearances.

This sort of form is exactly what Rangers want to see out of a striker, and there is every chance he can carry his form from the Finnish league to the Scottish.

Rangers have been crying out for their own Dembele, and Morelos can be that fan, a striker who scores regularly and puts fear into opposition.

The 20-year-old needs to prove himself worthy of Rangers’ investment once he arrives at Ibrox, but there is every chance he can be exactly what they need.

After an underwhelming start to the transfer window, Rangers’ business is really taking shape, and they should be confident they have finally found the talismanic goalscorer they need if they are to really threaten Celtic.
