Nottingham Forest targeting Hull’s Allan McGregor but do they even need another goalkeeper with Jordan Smith in decent form?

Nottingham Forest’s pursuit of a new goalkeeper has now lead them to Hull City’s Allan McGregor, reports the Nottingham Post, as they look for a replacement for the injured Stephen Henderson.

Henderson has not played for the Reds since suffering an Achilles injury in February and the club have also been linked with Liverpool’s Adam Bogdan, David Button of Fulham and Swansea City stopper Kristoffer Nordfeldt.

McGregor, meanwhile, looked to be heading for the exit door at the KCOM Stadium last season when he was loaned out to Cardiff City for the latter half of the campaign.

However, the departure of Eldin Jakupovic to Leicester City and injury to David Marshall saw the 35-year-old – who is in the last year of his current contract – start the Tigers’ opening day 1-1 draw with Aston Villa in the Championship.

Forest are still confident of signing McGregor, though, but the real question is whether they actually need another ‘keeper at the City Ground?

The injury to Henderson last term saw Jordan Smith hastily moved between the posts and his impressive performances during 15 league games were one of the unexpected positives for the club in 2016/17.

Smith also started in goal for Mark Warburton’s men in the opening fixture this time around, keeping a clean-sheet as the Reds beat Millwall 1-0.

Dimitar Evtimov is now the 22-year-old’s deputy in Henderson’s absence, while Liam Bossin was signed from Anderlecht this summer as well to further bolster Warburton’s options. Instead of signing someone new, perhaps Smith should be given the chance he has certainly earned.
