Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has given his verdict on Liverpool’s Diogo Jota and his decision to not pass to Cristiano Ronaldo on Tuesday.
Jota turned out for Portugal at Euro 2020, and he was presented with a golden opportunity early in the match to get an assist.
After a bit of trickery, Jota had a perfect chance to play the ball to Cristiano Ronaldo, who had a clear look at goal, but instead, Jota took a snapshot that was saved by the goalkeeper.
Wright simply can’t understand why Jota didn’t pass to his teammate.

Wright was baffled by Jota’s decision to shoot rather than to pass.
“You know what, Portugal. I was watching this game and it was very interesting towards the start because Diogo Jota has this opportunity and my head and my mind and my football mind started to go to a different place because I was thinking how on Earth do you not square it to Cristiano Ronaldo? Honestly, my mind just went to different places. Is he so confident in himself that he can say ‘I’m not going to pass it to arguably the greatest goalscorer that ever live’ for the life of me I could not understand why he doesn’t square that,” Wright said.
Why has he done it?
We really wish we could give Wright an answer on why Jota shot rather than passing, but we’re as stumped as he is.
Jota is usually quite an unselfish player, but this time it seems as though adrenaline may have gotten the better of him.
To be fair, it was a chance to score a goal in the opening five minutes of Portugal’s Euro 2020 campaign, and most players can only dream of such an opportunity, but sometimes, you just have to put the team first.
