West Ham are reportedly tracking Lyon defender Marcelo, but have been linked with plenty of other centre-backs.

Manuel Pellegrini of Manchester City looks on during the Barclays Premier League match between Manchester City and Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on May 8, 2016 in Manchester, England.

West Ham United are making no secret of the fact that they are after a centre-back this summer. Plenty of names have been linked – even after the signing of Issa Diop from Toulouse.

The Hammers are seemingly well-stocked at centre-back, with Angelo Ogbonna, Winston Reid, Declan Rice and Reece Oxford providing competition for Diop. Though Manuel Pellegrini may want to play three at the back.

Indeed, the Hammers remain on the hunt for another central defender after The Sun reported that West Ham are keen on Lyon centre-back Marcelo – who is available for a fee of £15million.

The linked to Brazilian rock Marcelo is just the latest in a long list of central defenders that have been touted with a move to West Ham, including Yerry Mina, Marlon, Craig Dawson and Alfie Mawson.

The latter has seemingly been the most prominent following Swansea City’s relegation to the Championship, with The Times reporting that West Ham were keen on Mawson last month. Wales Online claim he is worth £25million.

Though Mawson has age on his side at 24, the former Barnsley defender has enjoyed only one campaign in the top flight – which ultimately ended in relegation and for such a huge fee, he would be somewhat of a risk.

Alfie Mawson of Swansea City celebrates his side's 2-1 win in the Premier League match between Swansea City and Southampton at Liberty Stadium on January 31, 2017 in Swansea, Wales.

Indeed, at £10million less, the much more experienced Marcelo would prove to be a shrewder buy if Pellegrini is indeed keen on bringing the 6ft 3in powerhouse to the London Stadium after spells with Besiktas, Hannover and PSV Eindhoven.

Marcelo is the safe, more reliable option for Pellegrini this summer, and would indeed save a huge chunk of cash that West Ham can spend elsewhere.
