Paul Merson raved about West Ham United youngster Declan Rice on Sky Sports News (1:50pm, October 17, 2020).
The former Arsenal star, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, has been impressed with the discipline that Rice shows when he plays in defensive midfield.
The 21-year-old can operate in midfield or in central defence, and the England international has done well in both positions.
Merson believes that Rice is a very disciplined holding midfielder, and thinks that he could play in the middle of a back-three for England.
The Englishman said about Rice on Sky Sports News (1:50pm, October 17, 2020): “He’s a very disciplined holding midfield player and he’s very good.
“I think for his age, he’s very very disciplined, he doesn’t go chasing around like a headless chicken. I think he can end up playing as the one in the middle of a three for England at the back.”
Brilliant footballer
Rice is a very good and promising young player who has already established himself as a key figure in the current West Ham team.
The 21-year-old is one of the first names on manager David Moyes’s teamsheet and is a prized asset.
According to WhoScored, Rice has made four appearances in the Premier League for West Ham so far this season.
During the 2020-21 campaign, the 21-year-old scored one goal and provided three assists in the league, while in 2018-19, he scored two goals in 34 league games, according to WhoScored.
