Tony Bellew has hit out at the criticism aimed towards Dele Alli following his move to Everton from Tottenham.
The former cruiserweight champion claimed on Twitter that it’s ‘irrelevant’ what he wears after a scathing attack from Tottenham legend, Glenn Hoddle.
For several years now, Alli stagnated in Spurs colours and he struggled to rediscover the form that saw him light up the Premier League stage during his days as a fresh-faced youngster.
But that doesn’t mean that Hoddle should state that he ‘didn’t like the way he walked on the pitch with what he was wearing’, as he told BT Sport.
Alli will tell you himself that he has fallen off the footballing cliff, but that’s not because he decided to put a hat on his head.
Added with that, if he is going to get back to his best, it’s what he does on the training ground that counts, not what he does or doesn’t have in his wardrobe.
Everton fan and recently-retired boxer, Bellew, made his feelings clear when he read about Hoddle’s criticism.
Well, Alli will be looking to do his talking on the pitch this evening when his Everton side take on relegation-threatened Newcastle.
The Toffees secured a 4-1 win against Brentford in the FA Cup to get Frank Lampard’s reign off to the perfect start.
Given the dominant and uplifting performance from Everton, it might be a case of Lampard not changing much of his XI, other than the injured Ben Godfrey and Alli having to come off the bench.
Either way, this is now his chance to write a new chapter in his career and prove that he wasn’t just a highly-rated prospect.
