Celtic won’t be bringing Tommy Smith to Glasgow this summer.

It’s no secret that Celtic need at least two right-backs.
Neil Lennon has already seen Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa leave the Hoops after their contracts expired, while Jeremy Toljan has returned to parent club Borussia Dortmund following a forgettable loan in Glasgow.
Celtic have already kicked off their season and the sooner they sign reinforcements at right-back, the calmer fans – and manager – will be.
They had been linked to Tommy Smith and, for £4 million [The Examiner], missing out on him must hurt Lennon.
The 27-year-old has joined Stoke City in a relatively cheap move which Celtic could have certainly afforded.
Smith still has plenty left to offer and he would’ve been the answer to Lennon’s prayers – one of them, anyway.
In defence and attack, he has the characteristics that made him ideal for the Parkhead club, but obviously that won’t be happening now. It’s devastating for Lennon.
The good news is that Lennon will have alternative targets. Question is, was Smith the pick of the bunch? It’s very possible.
