The 31-year-old is impressing for Sunderland but why weren’t Leeds United battling them for his signature?

Aiden McGeady is one of the rare positives in an otherwise dreadful season for Sunderland so far.

The 31-year-old winger has managed three goals and three assists in eight Championship games since joining in a £250,000 deal from Everton in the summer.

There is no two ways about it – that is looking like an absolute bargain and you wonder whether Leeds should’ve been in contention for his signature.

Aiden McGeady of the Republic of Ireland warms up prior to the FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier between Republic of Ireland and Wales at Aviva Stadium on March 24, 2017 in Dublin, Ireland.

Leeds spent over £3 million on signing wingers Hadi Sacko and Pawel Cibicki who, between them, have 34 minutes of Championship football this season – all from Sacko. Whether he’s on the left or right, McGeady is a better option than both.

Then again, he may have snubbed a move to Elland Road in favour of Sunderland in any case.

The Republic of Ireland international dazzled under Simon Grayson at Preston North End last season and perhaps it would’ve been difficult convincing him to join Leeds – or anybody else in the Championship – and snub a reunion with Grayson.

He does not really fit the bill of a Victor Orta signing, with Leeds’ Director of Football recruiting an abundance of unknowns in the summer, many of whom – including Samu Saiz, Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Egzjan Alioski – have looked like excellent additions.

But McGeady’s success should remind the Spaniard that there are plenty of bargains to be had a little closer to home and it is worth keeping that in mind when the transfer window re-opens.
