The Manchester United attacker could rediscover his best form at Tottenham Hotspur.
According to a recent report the Mirror, Manchester United are likely to accept around £12.5million for Netherlands international Memphis Depay in January.
That is half the amount United paid PSV Eindhoven for his services and while he has been disappointing since moving to England, for that price Tottenham Hotspur should take the risk.
As reported by the Sun, Spurs are keen on bringing the 22-year-old to White Hart Lane and for the kind of money reported it could prove to be a masterstroke.
Critics point to Depay’s poor return of just seven goals and seven assists in 56 appearances for United, but there is more to it than that.
This season Depay has featured eight times for United and yet only one of those was from the start, with his other seven appearances totalling just 79 minutes (including only 20 in the Premier League), while last year he was settling into his new surroundings and playing under a manager who negated his attacking intent.
Not many players would be able to make any real impact when given a few minutes here and there, and what Depay really needs is a club, and a manager, who are going to put their faith in him and use him week in, week out.
Wingers are often the most erratic of players, but at his best Depay is superb, as he proved when he scored 28 goals in his last season at PSV.
You would never expect Tottenham to pay £25million for a player needing to kick-start his career, but for half that amount he is a risk worth taking.
Depay is still young, he has a point to prove and he is exactly the kind of payer Tottenham need, adding flair on the wing and additional goal threat up front, while his value is only likely to increase if they get him for a knock-down price.
In fact, if he plays to his full potential he could become a superstar at Tottenham, making the move some felt he should have prior to his switch to Old Trafford.
