Chris Sutton has criticised Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp after his complaints about the state of Fulham’s pitch.
Klopp’s side kicked off their Premier League campaign on Saturday by dropping two points at Craven Cottage following a 2-2 draw.
After the game, the Liverpool manager slammed the playing conditions in West London, claiming the pitch was too dry.
And Sutton has told The Daily Mail that the Reds boss is simply using irrelevant excuses to cover his team’s inadequacy on the day.
He said: “Jurgen Klopp suggesting Liverpool were held back by a dry pitch at Fulham is up there with football’s worst excuses. Like many bosses, Klopp is armed with a list of excuses when things don’t go his team’s way. Sometimes, a head coach should just say it as it is.”
Whether the Liverpool boss actually genuinely meant his comments remain to be seen.
The German is one of the best man-managers in football and part of that is defending his team against criticism.
So it’s entirely possible that Klopp deflected attention away from the Anfield outfit’s performance simply to protect them from criticism, throwing himself in front of the bus instead.
Klopp’s side, two points behind Manchester City already, are back in Premier League action next Monday at home to Crystal Palace.
