Aston Villa edged their way into the second round of the Carabao Cup by beating League Two outfit Colchester United 2-1 on Wednesday evening.
Villa opened their league campaign with a 1-1 home draw against Hull City, but Steve Bruce picked up his first win of the season with a victory over Colchester United.
Villa took the lead through striker Scott Hogan’s first half goal, before United defender Frankie Kent inadvertently turned Albert Adomah’s cross into his own net to put Villa 2-0 up inside 20 minutes.
Kent did make amends for his error by pulling a goal back, but Villa managed to see out the game and claim a 2-1 victory, setting up a second round clash with Wigan Athletic.
It was a particularly important night for attacker Hogan, who has endured a frustrating time at Villa Park since completing a big-money move from Brentford, as he struggled with knocks and niggles last term.
Hogan ended last season with one goal in 13 appearances for Villa, and he couldn’t find the net during the 1-1 draw with Hull on Saturday, but got off the mark for the season with his opener against Colchester.

The 25-year-old forward built up a huge reputation with Brentford having hit 21 goals in 35 games, and whilst injuries have damaged him in recent years, Hogan is still expected to be a big player for Villa this season given the huge fee they paid for him earlier this year.
Now, pundit Adam Virgo has taken to Twitter to suggest that a fully fit Hogan could be the man to fire Villa back to the Premier League, highlighting his pace and movement as a key reason why he can be vital for Bruce’s men this season.
