The Football Association have made it clear to Gareth Southgate that the England job is his if he wants it, and they will wait for him to confirm whether he will continue in charge.

HITC confirmed last week that the FA had made clear their position on Southgate, in that they would like him to sign a new deal and stay until the World Cup in North America in 2026.

FA sources have confirmed to HITC that the result of Euro 2024 was never going to be a deciding factor, but following a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the final at Berlin, Southgate has a decision to make.

England coach Gareth Southgate looks set to leave

HITC can now reveal that well placed sources have told us that they expect Southgate to leave his role as England head coach and that the defeat to Spain is set to be his last game in charge.

Southgate has been in charge of England for eight-years but after back-to-back European final defeats, it is believed he is expected to turn down the chance of extending his contract which runs to December this year.

HITC is told that Southgate’s decision was already taken before Euro 2024 and despite the World Cup being just two-years away, his looks increasingly unlikely to continue leading the Three Lions.

Southgate himself was asked about his future immediately after England’s 2-1 loss in the German capital.

“I don’t think now is a good time to make a decision like that. I’m going to talk to the right people,” Southgate told ITV Sport.

“It’s just not for now.”

Gareth Southgate encouraged to continue by former England captain

Speaking the morning after the night before, former England captain John Terry threw his support behind Southgate and urged him to continue.

Speaking to Good Morning Britain he said: “A lot of ex-players and pundits have been very critical but I think he has done an excellent job.

“He will go away and think about his future but I think he believes there is a trophy to win with this group of players.”

If Southgate does decide to walk away, HITC has previously revealed that the FA won’t be caught off guard as they have being doing their due diligence on potential successors with Eddie Howe, Graham Potter and Lee Carsley believed to be in contention.
