Well, it’s been quite a week for Liverpool fans. Jürgen Klopp signed a new contract, and the Reds also reached the Champions League final.

Now, Nike have added to the excitement by releasing the new Liverpool home shirt, which Klopp’s men will wear throughout the 2022/23 campaign.

What’s the story?

Well, Nike have kept things simple with the new strip, although that isn’t always necessarily a bad thing when it comes to designing football shirts.

The fresh release was modelled by Virgil van Dijk, Jordan Henderson, Luis Diaz, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ibrahima Konate, Curtis Jones and Trent Alexander-Arnold in the announcement video, which you can see below.

Interestingly, Klopp also makes an appearance 28 seconds into the video, wearing what appears to be the new training gear for Liverpool’s coaching staff.

There is also another intriguing aspect of the announcement video.

Usually, Liverpool wear 96 on the back of their shirts, in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster.

Now, however, that has changed to 97, after a coroner ruled Andrew Devine as the 97th victim of the disaster.

Devine passed away at the age of 55 in July 2021, 32 years after he suffered severe and irreversible brain damage at Hillsborough in 1989.

A lovely touch from Liverpool, to say the least.

New Liverpool kit could be a historic one

If Liverpool go on to secure the quadruple, their new home shirt will be a historic one, even before a ball is kicked in the 2022/23 season.

It will have gold Premier League badges, a No.7 instead of the No.6 on the Champions League badges, and if the Reds go on to win the Club World Cup, they will also be able to proudly don the gold chest badge which they wore in the 2019/20 season.

Should Klopp guide Liverpool to all four trophies this term, we’re almost certain this strip will be flying off the shelves.
