Newcastle United have been heavily linked with making Paulo Fonseca their new manager, but he could be experiencing a sense of deja vu very quickly.

The Magpies parted ways with Steve Bruce earlier this month having finally seen their big Saudi-led takeover go through.

PIF are now looking for a new manager with Graeme Jones in temporary charge, and a host of candidates have been suggested.

Fonseca looked to be closing in on the job just over a week ago.

The Telegraph reported that Fonseca was Amanda Staveley’s pick for the job and a £6million-a-year deal was seemingly on the table.

It’s all gone a little quiet for Fonseca though, leaving him fearing a repeat situation after being targeted by Tottenham Hotspur.

Fonseca to miss out on Newcastle job, just like Tottenham role?

Some will remember that Fonseca was the hot favourite for the Tottenham job over the summer too.

Fonseca himself claims a contract was agreed, but he was snubbed by Tottenham in the end as they wanted a more defensive coach.

Nuno came in instead, and you can hardly say that was worked well.

Fonseca is still keen to work in the Premier League, and will have been hoping to get that chance with Newcastle.

Fonseca would be forgiven for feeling that lightning is striking twice though.

Strong reports linking Newcastle with other managers are really emerging.

The Daily Mail claim that Newcastle want Ajax boss Erik ten Hag in a huge deal. 90Min add that Leonardo Jardim is emerging as a strong contender for the job too.

After Tottenham ditched their move for Fonseca to go elsewhere, it sounds like Newcastle could follow suit.

The coming days will determine a lot for Fonseca, especially with Tottenham potentially looking for a manger again, but he may well fear being overlooked for a second time.
