Mikel Arteta announced earlier today that Alexandre Lacazette has taken over the captain’s armband at Arsenal following the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the north London manager revealed that the French attacker will lead the Gunners in the second half of the season after replacing Aubameyang as captain in December.
Lacazette is one of Arsenal’s longest-serving players in the current squad and has acted as captain over multiple times during his career with the Premier League giants.
And now, the 30-year-old striker will captain Arsenal for the remainder of the season, however, this decision from Arteta has been criticised by some supporters with Lacazette set to leave in the summer.
Indeed, the former Olympique Lyonnais star is one of a handful of players who is expected to leave Arsenal this summer, and Arteta’s decision to hand Lacazette the captain’s armband has been branded as a strange choice.
With Arsenal bolstering a young squad of players who have worn the armband for other clubs and on an international level, such as Kieran Tierney and Martin Odegaard, supporters are baffled why neither of these names were considered.
Arsenal fans slam decision to make Lacazette permanent captain

Lacazette’s lack of goals make the decision that much more interesting from Arteta. And for many Arsenal fans on social media, the choice of making the Frenchman captain is a poor one from the Gunners manager.
Here’s what some Arsenal fans had to say on Twitter about Arteta naming Lacazette captain of the club…
