Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham boasted of dominance upon return to the Scottish Premiership. Celtic have firmly disproved that.
The optimism of the summer of 2016 at Rangers must feel a long time ago now for fans at Ibrox.
Newly promoted Rangers won promotion to the top flight and beat Celtic on penalties in the Scottish Cup semi-final.
Goalkeeper Wes Foderingham was particularly excited about Rangers’ chances of becoming Scotland’s top team.
He told the Scottish Sun that he felt no team in Scotland could live with the Gers at their best.
Foderingham boasted: “All the sides in the top league are decent and pose a threat.
“But if we do what we can do then we know we have too much quality for anyone in this league.
“This season is a step up but one we are ready for. We have fantastic quality in our squad and we expect to be right up there.”
Rangers’ optimism came crashing down to earth one month after Foderingham’s comments when they were demolished 5-1 by Celtic.
What he had not counted on was the impact Brendan Rodgers would have at Celtic, who have lost just three domestic games in two years.
The Gers have failed to win a single Old Firm game in 11 attempts since Foderingham’s comments with Celtic making the tie one of football’s most one-sided rivalries.
Rangers have lost the last two games to Celtic by an aggregate of 9-0 and it is clear there is only one team in Glasgow with ‘too much quality’.
