Newcastle United’s Florian Lejeune would surely be rendered less important if David Luiz is signed.

According to The Shields Gazette, Newcastle United are interested in signing Chelsea defender David Luiz in January, if the Blues are willing to loan him out.

The Brazil centre-back is thought to have fallen out with Blues boss Antonio Conte and the 30-year-old – who has a knee injury – could be available for loan it seems.

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez previously worked with the South American in West London and it wouldn’t be a huge shock if Luiz was also keen on a reunion.

But what would such a reunion mean for Florian Lejeune?

The French centre-back joined the Magpies for £8.8 million in the summer but has looked increasingly poor and some fans of the Tyneside club wouldn’t be against the idea of seeing Ciaran Clark partner fit-again Jamal Lascelles in the heart of their defence.

The former Deportivo man must already be low on confidence following such a modest start to life in the Premier League, but he’ll feel a whole lot worse about his situation if he sees Luiz turn up in the North East next month.

Lascelles and Luiz in defence would surely help Newcastle – who have lost eight of their last nine games, with Lejeune playing all of them – stave off the threat of relegation and you wonder just what kind of role the former France Under-21 defender will have.
