Steven Fletcher could bag his 100th career goal against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Sheffield Wednesday striker Steven Fletcher has told the club’s official website he is under no illusions about the size of the task the Owls face in chasing promotion.
The 29-year-old has spent most of his career in the top flight, and despite beginning life at Hillsborough with a flourish, he said he has always been aware of how tough the Championship is.
Speaking to the club’s official website, he said “When I was in the Premier League and we played cup games against Championship sides we never looked forward to it. You knew it was going to be a tough game and now I’m here, I realise why. The players in this division are quality.”
The former Burnley, Sunderland and Marseille striker has scored twice in his last three games for the Owls and will reach a landmark 100 career goals if he finds the back of the net against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Carlos Carvalhal’s men, who reached last year’s play-off final, are currently 14th in the table after losing three of their opening eight games.
Discipline has been an issue, with Don Hutchinson and David Jones both receiving red cards in recent games.Their last outing saw them forfeit a 76th-minute lead against Birmingham City, shipping two goals in the final nine minutes of the game.
Of their start, Fletcher added that “Opposing teams have been very complimentary about us but obviously sometimes results haven’t gone the way we would have liked. We’ve battled well, had some good results and some games that we maybe should have done a little better in but overall I think we’ve shown that we’re a very good team.”
Nottingham Forest are one place above Sheffield Wednesday in the table following a similarly lukewarm start to the season and Fletcher will fancy his chances against a defence who have shipped ten goals already this month.
