The night also saw Jon Flanagan make his long-awaited return from a knee injury as a second half substitute after over 600 days since his last first team game as he got a rousing reception from Anfield.
Unsurprisingly a lot of the reaction from the players on twitter was of joy of booking their place in the next round of the competition – where the Reds will face West Ham United at Anfield – and on welcoming back Flanagan into first team action.
