Having sacked Ronald Koeman but not appointed a successor yet, Everton are currently aimlessly drifting through the season.

It’s a risky situation for the Toffees to be in, because the drive and thrust of a new coach is something that could lift them out of the relegation trouble they find themselves in.

Having a long-term caretaker assume full control is only really effective when the fired manager is trying to hard to meddle with a squad that is otherwise okay. In this case, Everton’s squad is itself the problem, so what can David Unsworth be expected to do?

Well, blood the youngsters. Everton have lots of quality young talent, some of it is already (like Tom Davies) featuring but it’s not central to proceedings. Unsworth should consider bringing them through en massé in order to give the club a direction and purpose. Who are these youngsters? Well…

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

The young hotshot striker was often used by Ronald Koeman to add some pace and thrust off the bench should now be given a starting berth by Unsworth. Calvert-Lewin scored the winning goal for England in the 2017 u-20 FIFA World Cup final and should be allowed to bring that pace, passion and drive to Everton.

Mason Holgate

Holgate has often struggled to settle into the Everton side so far this season, but part of that is down to the fact that he’s often played as a right-back when he is a central defender who just needs a run of games to show his ski

Jonjoe Kenny

Kenny is already playing but that’s only because of injury. But Unsworth should stand by his man even upon Seamus Coleman’s return, because it’ll take the Irishman time to find his level again whilst Kenny could be special. The young right-back also excelled for England at the u-20 World Cup, but gives Everton a resilience.

Ademola Lookman

Unsworth has already begun to give Lookman more minutes, and it’s something he should keep on doing. The Wandsworth-born winger is a thrill to watch and plays with a fearless energy that has such a positive effect on the team.

Beni Baningime

Baningime played under Unsworth for the Everton u-23’s and did well enough that Unsworth has given him his debut with the senior side. With Morgan Schneiderlin injured, it could fall to the 19 year-old Congolese to partner Idrissa Gueye in the middle of the pitch. He would bring tough-tackling and quality passing.
