Tottenham Hotspur ended a second straight transfer window without a signing, choosing not to get involved in the January transfer window.

However, Spurs do need some English signings soon. Their last English addition was Kieran Trippier from Burnley in 2015, meaning it’s nearly four years since an English addition to Pochettino’s first team.

With Eric Dier not counted as a homegrown player due to his Portuguese schooling, Spurs need English players for quotas in the Premier League and the Champions League next season and beyond.

Here are four talented English youngsters who Spurs should target this summer to help their quota issues…

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Crystal Palace right back Wan-Bissaka has emerged as one of the Premier League’s top young defenders over the last year, starring under Roy Hodgson. With neither Kieran Trippier nor Serge Aurier impressing at right back this season, swooping in for Wan-Bissaka would be an ideal move for Spurs. The 21-year-old is a former winger, but he has shown that he is just as good defensively as he is going forward. Spurs waited too long to get Wilfried Zaha, and must not make the same mistake again, with Wan-Bissaka the ideal target for Tottenham this summer.

Kalvin Phillips

The London Evening Standard recently noted that Spurs want English players, and a new centre back and holding midfielder are wanted. One player who fits the bill perfectly as he has played in both roles this season is Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips. The 23-year-old has been the heartbeat of the Leeds midfield this season, emerging as a superb holding midfielder both on the ball and in protecting his defence. Pochettino’s tactics were generated under Marcelo Bielsa’s ideology, and having spent almost a season under Bielsa, joining Pochettino may be a great transition for the midfielder, though a move would only seem likely if Leeds miss out on promotion this season.

Eberechi Eze

The Standard noted earlier this season that Spurs have been scouting QPR ace Eze, and he should remain on the Tottenham radar. A skilful attacking midfielder with a box of tricks, Eze has notched four goals and three assists this season, continuing to impress for the R’s. Eze, 20, has a Premier League future ahead of him, and Spurs shouldn’t miss out, especially with Eze right on their doorstep. Learning around Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-min and former Football League star Dele Alli would be ideal for Eze, and he appears to fit Tottenham’s strategy perfectly.

Jarrod Bowen

Hull star Bowen has been touted as a Spurs target for a few months now, and it’s not hard to see why. The 22-year-old has been sensational for the Tigers this season, smashing 15 goals and three assists this term, building on 14 goals and one assist last term. Bowen looks to have major potential and his versatility to play out wide or up front should be ideal for Spurs. As one of the top English attackers outside of the Premier League, Bowen should be a top Spurs target this summer.

Ollie Watkins

Another talented attacker, Brentford’s Watkins fits the Tottenham profile too. Watkins, 23, has hit nine goals and four assists in the Championship this season, continuing to thrive after 10 goals and four assists in the whole of last season. Primarily a left winger who can also play up front, Watkins will surely make a Premier League move soon, and Spurs should be ready to pounce this summer, rather than wait for another club to sign him and have his value shoot through the roof, much like with Bournemouth’s David Brooks.
