The Owls are now an established Championship outfit.

It is five years ago today that Sheffield Wednesday suffered one of its most humiliating defeats at the hands of Stevenage.

Then in League One, the promotion-chasing Owls were stuffed 5-1 at Broadhall Way, with everything their hosts hit appearing to fly in.

Of course, it all ended happily for Wednesday, who pipped their city rivals United to second spot and leaving them behind.

Now unrecognisable, and fighting for a place in the Premier League, this was the eleven that day.

Richard O’Donnell

The Owls academy product celebrated his 28th birthday on Monday and is due to face his boyhood club on Tuesday with current employers Bristol City, whom he joined in January via spells at Chesterfield and Walsall.

Lewis Buxton

Released by Rotherham United in the summer, Buxton signed for Bolton Wanderers and has played every minute in the league so far – alongside former Hillsborough teammate Mark Beevers. He is yet to taste defeat in the competition.

Danny Batth

Captain of boyhood club Wolves, to whom he returned at the end of Wednesday’s victorious 2011-12 campaign.

Rob Jones

The towering centre-back finds himself at Hartlepool United, having played for and managed Doncaster Rovers since leaving Hillsborough four years ago.

Julian Bennett

Retired as of two years ago, having suffered a serious injury on his Southend United debut, the 31-year-old appeared on just 23 occasions – for Wednesday, Shrewsbury and Southend – after this game.

Liam Palmer

The Owls’ longest-serving player, Palmer recently won back his place in the first team – ahead of Jack Hunt at right-back.

Jose Semedo

The Portuguese midfielder was a unanimous choice for player of the year that season and while his on-field influence has reduced, he remains a key member of the Sheffield Wednesday family. His eventual departure from Hillsborough will require a police escort.

David Prutton

Now a regular pundit on Sky Sports, having retired upon the expiry of his Owls contract in 2014.

Ben Marshall

Currently plying his trade at Blackburn Rovers, where he occasionally appears at right-back. The 25-year-old has had a medical at Wednesday every summer since 2011, if the Twitter rumours are true.

Gary Madine

Another of Bolton’s ex-Wednesday contingent, Madine has picked up where he left off in League One – scoring three goals in the Trotters’ first seven matches. After firing the Owls to promotion with 18 strikes, the 26-year-old enjoyed a spell at HMP Leeds.

Clinton Morrison

Still going at 37, Morrison recently signed for Derbyshire-based Mickleover Sport, following spells at Colchester United, Long Eaton United, Exeter City and Redditch United.

Subs:

Reda Johnson

Now with Ronnie Moore’s Eastleigh FC after two injury-hit years at Coventry City, in which he was a regular in the Wednesday away end.

Jermaine Johnson

The 36-year-old is back at first club Tivoli Gardens in Jamaica, after a season with North American Soccer League side Indy Eleven.

James O’Connor

Another who fled across the Atlantic upon leaving the Owls, O’Connor played with Kaka in Orlando for a bit and is now the head coach of Louisville City.

Without a job since his controversial sacking in February 2012 – after Wednesday’s 1-0 win against United – the boyhood Owl and former player admitted recently he will not even return to Hillsborough as a spectator while ‘certain people’ remain at the club.
