The Frenchman remains a Leeds United player although he has barely featured for the under-23s this season.
Five weeks ago, Leeds United’s under-23 defender Amadou Haidara posted a picture on Instagram of him in action for the Whites’ under-23s, along a message declaring that the battles continues.
Unfortunately for the centre-back, he has barely featured for Leeds’ second string since and appears to have been taken by some of the Whites’ summer recruits such as Oriol Rey.
With Leeds’ director of football Victor Orta wasting no time bringing in some exciting youngsters from across the continent during the last transfer window, it was clear that there was about to be a significant change for an under-23 side that lost time and again last season. And considering Haidara was only a sporadic starter during that ill-fated campaign, it seemed he was facing a losing battle regardless of his fighting talk.
An under-the-radar signing when he arrived at Elland Road in 2016, Haidara has got nowhere near the Leeds first-team to date and when you consider Conor Shaughnessy’s emergence and Paudie O’Connor’s potential, a senior breakthrough does not appear to be on the cards.
He will no doubt be hoping to get his chance in due course, but Rey’s presence gives Haidara yet another challenge to overcome and the former Barcelona teenager has impressed in the early weeks of the campaign, leaving Haidara on the side-lines looking in.
The truth is this is one signing Leeds fans will never be able to get their heads around, with Hadi Sacko’s friend destined, at best, to be the answer to an obscure quiz question in years to come.
If there are more battles for Haidara in the future, expect them to be away from a Leeds side that simply does not need him.
