Players and managers from Chelsea, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers feature on our list of pantomime villains from the weekend’s football action.
Luis Suarez
This column was made for Luis Suarez after the weekend he had. He chose not to shake hands with Patrice Evra, seemingly against the advice of his manager, and is now at risk of being kicked out of Liverpool in the summer. The fact Suarez could be a medal winner at the Carling Cup final in a fortnight’s time will not sit well with neutrals disgusted at his actions.
Frank Lampard
The midfielder has had a mixed season, and this weekend was one for him to forget. In trying to intercept the ball against Everton, he delivered an inch-perfect assist for Steven Pienaar to put the hosts ahead. It was almost like an own goal. Chelsea never recovered and went onto lose 2-0.
Kevin Davies
The Bolton Wanderers striker has been out of form for around 18 months but its no excuse to go around taking it out on other players. His two-footed tackle on Wigan’s Maynor Figueroa should have seen a red card. He injured Manchester United’s Tom Cleverley earlier in the season with a terrible tackle and needs to be less reckless.
Alex McLeish
If the Aston Villa manager does not make it in post until the end of the season, he faces forever being remembered as the man who played Emile Heskey in right midfield and at right back. The makeshift deployment of the non-goalscoring striker summed up Villa’s day, his side had very little ambition against Manchester City, and are now without a league home win since the Autumn. Fans see the Scotsman’s dour brand of football as a principle reason why.
Didier Drogba
The Chelsea striker was busy at the African Nations Cup this weekend but still makes it onto our list. Ivory Coast were locked 0-0 in the tournament final against underdogs Zambia when they were awarded a penalty. Drogba stepped up, and took a truly awful penalty, blazing over. The match continued, and Zambia won after a penalty shoot out, leaving Drogba ruing his miss further.
