Five Tottenham and Liverpool players have made Jamie Carragher’s Team of the Year.
Jamie Carragher has told The Mail that three Tottenham Hotspur men deserves their place in his Team of the Year for 2016.
Tottenham were Leicester City’s main title rivals last season but a late capitulation saw them finish third in the Premier League and 11 points behind the Foxes in the end.
They did, however, boast the best defence in the division, with Spurs and Man United only conceding 35 times last season in a stat which is obviously down to five players in particular.
But Carragher has singled out three of them in particular as he punted for goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, centre-back Toby Alderweireld and left-back Danny Rose for his Team of the Year.
The Liverpool legend also included the “outstanding” Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana in his list, claiming the latter is the best Englishman in the Premier League at the moment.
“Lloris gets the nod in goal over Manchester United’s David De Gea. He only conceded 31 goals in 34 games and his save against Monaco in the Champions League was as good as anything we have seen,” he told The Mail.
“The defence picks itself, as does the forward line, but Mane and Lallana are included in midfield for their consistency, their class and most of all the improvement they have shown over the last 12 months.
“Mane has been outstanding, Lallana is currently the best English player in the division. “
The pressure is on Spurs at St Mary’s on Wednesday as Mauricio Pochettino’s side travel to Southampton in the knowledge that their top-four rivals have all won over the festive period.
They are four points behind fourth-placed Arsenal, who left it late to beat West Brom on Boxing Day, and only a victory will do. Defeat at St Mary’s wouldn’t be detrimental by any means, but it would not feel quite the same.
