Everton are through to the third round of the EFL Cup after thrashing Yeovil Town 4-0.
Everton continued their unbeaten start to season with an easy 4-0 win over League Two side Yeovil Town.
Goals by Aaron Lennon, Ross Barkley and two from Arouna Kone helped secure the win for the Blues. Ashley Williams and Yannick Bolasie made full debuts in a strong line-up.
Here are the five key points from Everton’s victory at Goodison Park.
1. Koeman is taking the competition seriously
The EFL Cup can sometimes be looked upon as a competition where Premier League teams make several changes. Ronald Koeman has made his intentions clear by insisting that he is taking the cup seriously. Koeman made four changes from the side that won against West Brom on the weekend.
Ashley Williams, Yannick Bolasie, Bryan Oviedo and Aaron Lennon made their first starts for the Blues this season. Everton fans will be happy that this is a competition Koeman believes the Blues can win. The Toffees were unlucky in both domestic cup competitions last season, losing in both semi-finals.
Everton have already shown plenty of positive signs this season under new boss Koeman. Fans will be hoping that the Dutchman can guide the Blues to their first trophy in 21 years.
2. Lukaku must step up
Romelu Lukaku may have committed his future to Everton for at least one more season, but the striker has failed to impress in the two games he has featured in.
The Belgium international has just returned from a heel injury and still doesn’t look 100 percent fit. Lukaku missed some killer chances and has so far failed to live up to the reputation of the Toffees’ leading goal scorer.
3. The young guns impress
Ross Barkley was selected as Everton’s captain for the first time. The 22-year-old put in a mature performance and even scored from a free-kick.
19-year-old Mason Holgate continues to impress and has proven why he deserves his place in Everton’s starting line-up. Holgate has featured in all three Everton games this season. The defender looks certain to have a massive future at Goodison Park.
4. Kone scores TWICE
A player who hasn’t scored since January, Arouna Kone came off the bench and duly scored two goals. The striker has had a lot of stick from Everton fans for the lack of goals and poor performances. The Ivorian will have to try and stay fit and impress against better teams in order to remain at Goodison.
Despite Kone’s good performance, Koeman will still be looking for a striker before the end of the transfer window.
5. Gueye is one of the best bargains this summer
Idrissa Gueye continues to impress. Costing the Blues just £7.1 million, Gueye has turned out to be one of the Toffees’ best signings of the summer.
Gueye has slotted into Koeman’s style of play straight away. The Senegal international has played a key part in all of the Blues’ games this season, and has certainly silenced those who doubted Koeman’s decision to sign the midfielder from Aston Villa.
