Tottenham Hotspur started the season with a defeat to Manchester United – here are five things we learned.
Alderweireld – not the next Lovren
After making his move to Tottenham, many wondered whether Toby Alderweireld would mirror Dejan Lovren’s struggles away from the veteran leadership of Jose Fonte at Southampton. However, the Belgian was superb again Manchester United, forming a strong partnership with Jan Vertonghen and bringing the ball of defence to start attacks. This was a great start to Alderweireld’s Tottenham career.
Bentaleb still has a lot of room to improve
Nabil Bentaleb is one of the brightest young players in the Premier League, not just at Tottenham – but Saturday’s game was not his finest display. The Algerian struggled throughout, giving the ball away on a regular basis before being replaced by Ryan Mason. There is plenty for Bentaleb to improve on, and Pochettino must work to make sure similar display isn’t repeated.
Attacking reinforcements are a must
The key in the Premier League is to take your chance when you’re on top – and Tottenham didn’t. They had great spells against United but failed to find the back of the net, and with better attacking threats, Pochettino’s men could have not only got a draw out of the game but possibly even win it. A player like Saido Berahin could have made all the difference, and Tottenham must put all their efforts into signing a striker before the transfer deadline.
Lamela drinking in the last chance saloon
Erik Lamela has been heavily criticised for his first two seasons at Tottenham, and he again failed to make an impact as a substitute against United. Young foreign players need time to adjust to the Premier League but for Lamela, chances are running out. Spurs need him to make a real impact in the final third sooner rather than later, or fans will call for him to be sold either in January or next summer.
Ultimately, nothing to worry about
Tottenham may not have won, but their display suggested that, with a couple more additions in the right areas, Pochettino’s side can compete with United. A top four place is therefore not out of the question, but a central midfielder and another striker are needed to get Tottenham back in contention for a Champions League place. Saturday’s game doesn’t give Spurs anything to really worry about, but more wrinkles that need to be ironed out for Pochettino.
