Sunderland’s spell in the Premier League comes to an end this weekend. Here are five stats they should address heading into the Championship

Big chances created – 18 (20th)

David Moyes will be on the hunt for creative players this summer after his Sunderland side manufactured the fewest clear cut chances in the Premier League. The likes of Billy Jones, Wahbi Khazri and Sebastian Larsson chipped in with two big chances created each.

Midfield goal – 4 (20th)

Sunderland’s midfield contributed the fewest goals in the Premier League. If the Black Cats want an instant return to the top-flight, they will desperately more goal scoring midfielders to ease the pressure on their forward line. This need for goals will only be compiled with the imminent departure of top scorer Jermain Defoe.

Shots on target – 116

Only Championship-bound Middlesbrough have managed fewer shots on target than Sunderland.

It should be pointed out that dropping down a division will not guarantee the Black Cats more opportunities on goal. Last season’s bottom Premier League club, Aston Villa, finished their Championship campaign with the 18th least shots on target (174) in the division.

Possession – 39%

If the stats are anything to go by, Sunderland will have to significantly improve their share of the ball next season. Each of the Championship’s top six sides finished with an average possession percentage greater than 50%.

Saves – 173

Sunderland goalkeepers have racked up the most saves in the Premier League. Jordan Pickford, in particular, has been very busy with 132 saves in 28 games. If Pickford leaves this summer, Moyes will need to find a worthy replacement – and a way to limit his opposition’s opportunities.
