While fans of Hull City, Middlesbrough and Sunderland won’t exactly be eagerly anticipating their respective returns to the Championship, they can take hope from the fact that there have been teams in the past who, having been relegated from the Premier League, bounced back immediately.

Indeed, Sunderland are one of those clubs, with the Black Cats winning the Championship in the 2006/07 season having been in turmoil at the end of the 2005/06 campaign, and there is every chance one of those three relegated teams can bounce back.

Here are the five most recent sides to be promoted back to the Premier League just one season after going through the misery of relegation.

Newcastle United – 2009/10 (and 2016/17)

The pictures of the Magpies celebrating with the Championship trophy weren’t exactly anything new, with the club essentially repeating what they’d done in the 2009/10 season – albeit making it a lot harder for themselves and relying on a Brighton and Hove Albion implosion, which is exactly what happened. In the 2009/10 campaign, Newcastle blew away everyone in sight and finished with a mammoth 102 points, losing just four of their 46 matches and leaving second placed West Bromwich Albion 11 points behind them. It was the perfect remedy to relegation the year before, and the momentum generated from that season set them in good stead for future campaigns. Proving lightning can strike twice, following their relegation in the 2015/16 season, Rafael Benitez led the Magpies to another Championship title.

West Ham United – 2011/12

Unlike Newcastle, West Ham had to reclaim their place in the Premier League the hard way, and went up through the play-offs. The 2010/11 season was a shambles for the Hammers, with the club finishing bottom of the Premier League, and while many West Ham fans hoped for an automatic return, it wasn’t to be. Ultimately, West Ham finished third in the Championship during the 2011/12 season, but they made getting promoted from the play-offs almost look easy. After blitzing Cardiff City 5-0 on aggregate over two legs, they then came up against Blackpool in the final. Carlton Cole set them on their way before Tom Ince equalised, only for Ricardo Vaz Te to become a West Ham hero by scoring the winner in the 87th minute. To their credit, West Ham have yet to return to the Championship.

Queens Park Rangers – 2013/14

If West Ham thought they had it bad when they were relegated, QPR went one step further in the 2012/13 Premier League campaign, where they finished bottom with a staggering 25 points, winning just four matches all season. With a bloated squad nearly all on mega bucks, QPR needed a miracle of sorts to lift the place. However, that’s exactly what they got, as after finishing fourth in the Championship, they overcame Wigan Athletic 2-1 on aggregate to reach the play-off final against Derby County. Despite being battered the whole game, going down to 10 men and having their goalkeeper dislocate his thumb with 25 minutes to go, QPR somehow snatched a last minute winner. Following an abysmal defensive howler from Derby’s Richard Keogh, Bobby Zamora scored with their only shot on target, and QPR returned to the top flight at the first attempt. However, QPR went down again the following season, and remain in the Championship.

Norwich City – 2014/15

After being relegated by just three points in the 2013/14 season, many expected Norwich – who’d kept the majority of their squad intact – to be an immediate threat in the Championship, though it very nearly didn’t happen. After persisting with youth coach Neil Adams, Norwich were three points off the play-offs and 10 behind the automatic places when Alex Neil was hired in mid January following Adams’ resignation, and suddenly Norwich looked a real force. The Canaries finished third, three points behind second placed Watford, and reached the play-off final after breezing past rivals Ipswich Town 4-2 on aggregate. They met Middlesbrough at Wembley, and two goals in three minutes saw them come out as 2-0 victors.

Burnley – 2015/16

Sean Dyche’s side went full yo-yo recently, though that seems to have stopped temporarily with their Premier League survival this campaign. Burnley went up from the Championship 2013/14 season in second place, but went straight back down again in the 2014/15 season, finishing second bottom. However, the 2015/16 campaign brought a lot of joy to the club, who went up as champions, with Dyche’s side losing just five of their 46 fixtures along the way. It seems Burnley have learnt from their experiences in the past having survived fairly comfortably in the Premier League this time around, and will be hoping to avoid ‘second season syndrome’ next year.
