With Manchester City completing the £12 million signing of Everton’s Jack Rodwell over the weekend, we look at five players who David Moyes could choose bring to Goodison Park with the funds.
Aaron Ramsey
After returning from loan spells at Nottingham Forest and former club Cardiff City, Aaron Ramsey has failed to find the form he enjoyed at Arsenal before his horrific leg-break in early 2010. With the emergence of Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and the eventual return of Jack Wilshere, Ramsey may struggle to hold a place down in the first-team so could well be tempted with a move away from the Emitrates. The Welsh captain might not want to call time on his Arsenal career just yet but surely a loan move for the player would be good for all three parties, with a view to a permanent deal at the end of the season if it works out.
Matt Jarvis
There’s no doubting Everton will be sure to miss Rodwell’s energy, but how about bringing in Matt Jarvis of Wolverhampton Wanderers- a different type of player but one highly coveted. The Wolves man has said that he wants to leave the Championship club to continue playing in the Premier League. West Ham United are said to be the favorites for Jarvis’ signature but maybe Goodison Park would be the preferred destination for the winger. The only issue lies with the player’s price-tag; Wolves have priced him at £10 million and no less – a little excessive you might say. Everton are short of wingers and he could be ideal.
Jermaine Pennant
Another player who has been linked with a move away from his club is Jermaine Pennant of Stoke City. The former Arsenal and Liverpool player at 29 years of age, is one with more experience than you first think and could well add something to David Moyes’ squad. Pennant, who was left frustrated last season after starting only 18 games for Stoke, has been linked with a move to Wigan Athletic as a potential replacement for Victor Moses if he leaves. The winger has said not to be interested in such a move but might think again if Everton come calling despite his Anfield connection.
Jake Livermore
The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder is making his name at Spurs after being solid performances in the centre of the park last season. After a number of loan-spells at other clubs, Livermore was given the chance to show what he could do at the North London club at the beginning of last season and soon became a constant in their squad. Although a move away from White Hart Lane at the moment would seem unlikely, especially with Scott Parker being out until September, it is worth bearing in mind that at Everton, Livermore would surely be more than just a squad player as Moyes could look to build the team around him.
Anthony Pilkington
2011-12 saw Anthony Pilkington enjoy a fine debut season in the Premier League, scoring eight goals from midfield as he made 30 appearances for Norwich City, not bad for a player who was previously playing two divisions below in League One for Huddersfield Town. With manager Paul Lambert leaving his position to take charge of Aston Villa, Norwich face their battle to avoid the dreaded second season-syndrome without the man who was able to motivate his players so well. While there’s no doubting the man-management skills of new boss Chris Hughton, Pilkington would surely consider the chance to play under a manager like David Moyes and for a club like Everton.
