Two points dropped in their opening game, and two of their best players from last season sold. But it is not all doom and gloom at Arsenal.
Here are five reasons why the Gunners can be positive.
Santi Cazorla looks like the signing of the season
Yes his performance against Sunderland was just ‘one game’ but those of us who have watched Cazorla in La Liga know that Arsenal have signed a gem. Pound for pound, he is arguably the signing of the season, purchased far below his market value thanks to Malaga’s troubles. He can play a variety of positions centrally and out wide, has a fierce shot on him, and will hit the back of the net regularly that is of no doubt. His would-be assist for Olivier Giroud was an exquisite pass, and if the Gunners are successful this season in their quest for silverware he will play a big role.
Goals will come for their new additions
So Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud did not hit the back of the net in their opening game, but fans should be wary of being worried. Both strikers have proven pedigrees, Podolski especially, and given time they will find their range. As they grow into their careers at Arsenal they will surely only improve. Obviously with coming from the French league comparisons with Chamakh will be made with Giroud until he scores, but these are unfair as he is his own man and own player.
Their midfield is up there with the league’s best
Song may be gone, but Arteta, Cazorla, Rosicky, Ramsey, Diaby, offer Arsenal a great hub in the middle of the park, and with the impending arrival of Nuri Sahin on loan their prospects are very exciting. Is their midfield better than that of Manchester United? Many would say so. If Yann M’Vila is bought too then the midfield really will have a bit of everything and competition for places will be intense. All of this is not to mention…
Their brightest talent is yet to return
Imagine the tough selection decisions Arsene Wenger will face when Jack Wilshere returns. The young midfielder is due to resume training in one month, and will add a new dimension to Arsenal’s play. The good thing about Arsenal at present is their midfield signings of late have meant that they are not dependent on the youngster returning, lessening the blow if he suffers another setback. When he returns it will be a bonus, and it could be the difference maker in the club’s season, but if not they may just be fine any way.
The squad are hungry and have a point to prove
The players are sick of the criticism for a lack of silverware, they know they have to deliver. This can only be a positive for the fans and club as a whole. Arsenal have bought proven players, at the right age, and seemingly abandoned their previous policy. They are pulling in the same direction and with manager too, understand another trophyless season will be seen as a failure. Knowing that the players sense the urgency should give supporters hope that this is the season they finally fulfil their potential and answer their critics.
