Billy Gilmour may be contemplating quitting Rangers, but he is not the only young talent at the club.

Under-20s coach Graeme Murty has revealed that manager Pedro Caixinha is integrating young players into his training sessions, with five stepping up last week.

Murty, who took on the role of interim manager before Caixinha was hired, did not disclose which players had got the call, but his comments are an encouraging sign.

Speaking to the Scottish Herald, Murty warned that the quintet are in line to overtake Gilmour in the pecking order.

He said: “What has been great since the manager has come in is there has been Under-20 and 17s round training with the first-team. They have the opportunity to show the manager what they are about.

“On Friday we had five training with the first-team which is fantastic for them. Some of the younger ones went round and were excellent and I was full of praise for them because they handled it really well.

“They have had a sniff of it and hopefully it lights a fire in some of them to say ‘I’m going to get in front of Billy and get that shirt’.”

Caixinha is under pressure to get results in the short term, but his decision to bring young players in to assess them shows he is planning for the long term.

His assessment of the youngster will also factor into his transfer plans, with the manager working out who will be ready to step up next season and save the club money in the summer window.
