We look at what West Bromwich Albion can expect in 2017.

West Brom manager Tony Pulis

1) How much will West Brom’s new owners spend?

After many prudent years under Jeremy Peace, West Bromwich Albion supporters will be hoping for a more ambitious approach to the transfer market under Guochuan Lai. The upcoming two transfer windows in 2017 will be a good indication of Lai’s approach and willingness to invest in the playing squad.

Prediction: West Brom will add quality in the transfer window and break their transfer record on more than one occasion.

2) Can Albion hold onto their star performers?

Buying players won’t be Lai and West Brom’s only concern. Jonny Evans has already drawn attention from Arsenal and Salomon Rondon’s form should also attract suitors from top-end Premier League clubs. There is a good possibility that Albion will field big-money offers from China for Rondon, who fits the profile of players being targeted for a move to Asia.

Prediction: Albion won’t sell in January and will offer improved contracts if necessary in the summer.

3) Will Pulis keep the supporters on side?

Things are beginning to look rosier between Baggies fans and Tony Pulis. There have been some entertaining games at the Hawthorns recently, and if Pulis can maintain the balance between results and aesthetics he should keep the supporters happy.

Prediction: Pulis continues to defy his critics and is still in the supporters good books come the start of 2018.

4) Can West Brom bring European football to the Hawthorns?

West Brom haven’t finished in the top half since the 2012/3 season, so a top seven finish would be a magnificent achievement of Tony Pulis’ side. The other route is for Albion to earn European football is through the FA Cup.

Prediction: European football will be a big ask for Albion. The depth of quality in the Premier League means it should be a step too far in 2017.

5) What will happen to Berahino?

The future of Saido Berahino will finally be solved in 2017. The forward has been involved in the most high profile, drawn-out and frustrating transfer saga in West Brom history.

Prediction: Berahino’s future will be decided in January with the 23-year-old opting for a fresh start away from the Hawthorns and English football.
