We take a look at what Watford can expect in 2017.
1) Will Walter Mazzarri see out 2017?
No Watford manager has lasted more than a season as Watford Head Coach since Gianfranco Zola. Mazzarri has been given a three-year contract, but the Pozzo’s proved contract length counts for little when they sacked Quique Sanchez Flores a year into his two-year deal.
Prediction: Mazzarri will buck the trend and earn an extended stay at Vicarage Road.
2) Will Ighalo move on?
In 2015, Odion Ighalo was setting the Premier League alight as part of a lethal strike partnership with Troy Deeney. Fast forward to the end of 2016 and both men are struggling to find the back of the net. Despite his form, Ighalo is likely to attract interest from low-end Premier League sides and teams abroad.
Prediction: Ighalo gets a move and rediscovers his goal-scoring touch.
3) Which players will shine?
If Ighalo leaves, 20-year-old Isaac Success will be expected to step up to the plate. The Nigerian has already shown signs in his cameo appearances that he can manage the physicality and pace of the Premier League. 2017 could be a big year for the young forward.
Prediction: Success makes a big impact towards the end of the 2016/7 season. Also expect Nordin Amrabat to continue his form into the New Year.
4) Will Deeney turn it around?
Deeney heads into 2017 on a low. Watford’s captain has endured a slow start to this season after being linked with a move to Premier League champions Leicester City in the summer.
Prediction: Deeney’s form will improve, but he needs an in-form forward alongside him. Stefano Okaka could be the answer.
5) Can Watford push up the table?
Watford will be hoping to improve on their 13th place finish in the 2015/6 season. Mazarri’s side have made a good start to the season but can’t afford to trail off like the Hornets did last season under Quique Sanchez Flores.
Prediction: Watford will improve on their final position – just – with a 12th place finish.
