Walter Smith has told The Scottish Sun that Rangers manager Steven Gerrard will consider that the Gers are five points ahead of Neil Lennon’s Celtic and not 11.
Rangers are at the top of the Scottish Premiership table at the moment with 41 points from 15 matches.
The Gers are as many as 11 points ahead of the Hoops, who have picked up 30 points from 13 games.
Former Rangers and Scotland manager Smith believes that Gerrard will not think that his side are 11 points ahead of their bitter Old Firm rivals.
The Scotsman told The Scottish Sun: “It’s easy for everyone to turn round and say that Celtic are 11 points behind. But I’ve no doubt that Steven will consider they are five points in front. That’s not an insult to other teams in Scotland. That’s just reality, based on Celtic’s track record.
“From a managerial point of view I would say, ‘Right, we’ve got ourselves five points in front and we need to keep going’. They will then face a challenge of trying to win every game, but the signs are good.”
Staying positive and not getting complacent
Celtic are not in great form at the moment, and there is no guarantee that they will win their two games in hand.
However, the Hoops have shown on more than one occasion that they can recover from disappointments and go on a winning run.
After all, Celtic have won the last nine Scottish Premiership titles and will be determined to make it 10 in a row.
Rangers need to continue to win their matches, and it would be a good idea for them to think that they are five points ahead and not 11. That would mean no room for complacency.
