Arsenal, Fulham, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Manchester City players can deem themselves unlucky to have missed out.
The PFA Team of the Season was announced an awards ceremony last night, with Robin van Persie winning Player of the Year, and Kyle Walker the young players accolade.
A team of the season was also announced, and as always not everybody agrees with the choices.
Here is the line-up: Hart, Kompany, Coloccini, Walker, Baines, Bale, Yaya Toure, Parker, Silva, Rooney, Van Persie.
And here are five players particularly unfortunate not to have made the cut.
Clint Dempsey
American Clint Dempsey is perhaps the most glaring omission from the team. He has hauled Fulham to assured safety when early in the season there were questions over the team’s ability. He has bagged 16 league goals and been a hugely consistent performer, especially at home, where he struck an excellent hat-trick against Newcastle at the beginning of the year. He has even been linked with moves to Arsenal and Manchester United in the summer.
Antonio Valencia
It took a little while for Valencia’s season to get going, suffering an early injury before playing at right-back. Since December he has been instrumental in Manchester United’s title charge, scoring two scorching goals away at Wolves and Blackburn, and winning United the game away at Arsenal with a goal and assist. He always looks a threat and is shaping up to be one of United’s best right-wingers in recent memory.
Laurent Koscielny
Frenchman Koscielny had a mixed opening season at Arsenal, getting better as time went on, even though the team’s fortunes got worse. This season he has continued his progression, becoming Arsenal’s most important defensive figure, ahead of Thomas Vermaelen. Like the Belgian, he has added a goal threat to his armoury, and many Arsenal fans will feel aggrieved at his snub.
Tim Krul
Joe Hart has done nothing wrong in goal for City, but then neither has Tim Krul for Newcastle. The Dutch stopper has overseen one of the meanest defences in the country, providing the backbone for Newcastle’s assault on the top four. He is highly rated and coveted by many top clubs, but Newcastle will not allow him to leave the club, recently tying him down to a long-term contract.
Sergio Aguero
Aguero has been an instant hit at Manchester City, from the very moment he came on against Swansea to make his stunning debut. His goals tally in his debut season has been superb, making a mockery of the claim that South Americans need time to settle into Premier League football. With three games to go, he can get one up on Wayne Rooney by firing City to the Premier League trophy.
