Sheffield Wednesday’s recruitment team could take in the 2018 World Cup in search of new additions. But which players should be the focus of the Owls’ attention? HITC Sport has picked out five to keep an eye on, including one who plays his club football for Sunderland…

Andreas Bjelland (Denmark and Brentford)

Andreas Bjelland of Brentford reacts during the Sky Bet Championship match between Brentford and Norwich City at Griffin Park on January 27, 2018 in Brentford, England.

A new centre-back is a must for Wednesday after Glen Loovens’ release, while Fredrico Venancio is not certain to return. And Bjelland, who is leaving Brentford at the end of his contract this summer, could be a useful addition.

Bryan Oviedo (Costa Rica and Sunderland)

Left-back may not be far behind on the Owls’ list of priorities, after George Boyd and Morgan Fox failed to convince in 2017-18. Oviedo – whose attack-mindedness would suit Jos Luhukay’s 5-3-2 system – still has two years left on his Sunderland deal, but could be moved on as the Mackems prepare to cut costs in League One. According to Transfermarkt, Sunderland paid £1.8 million for Oviedo 18 months ago.

Aron Gunnarsson (Iceland and Cardiff City)

Wednesday’s lack of midfield presence tends to show whenever Sam Hutchinson is absent, which was fairly often this past campaign, and signing Gunnarsson would help to address that. The combative Cardiff City man is another whose contract expires this summer.

Sam Morsy (Egypt and Wigan Athletic)

Sam Morsy of Wigan Athletic in action during the Sky Bet League One match between Wigan Athletic and Northampton Town at DW Stadium on September 19, 2017 in Wigan, England.

Morsy is another player the Owls could consider to strengthen their central midfield ranks, the significance of which will increase if Sean Clare fails to renew his deal at Hillsborough. The 26-year-old is particularly adept at carrying the ball forward – a trait that he shares with Clare. And while he would not come free, he is in the final year of his contract at Wigan, which could reduce his transfer fee.

Chung-yong Lee (South Korea and Crystal Palace)

Chung-yong Lee of Crystal Palace looks on during the Carabao Cup Third Round match between Crystal Palace and Huddersfield Town at Selhurst Park on September 19, 2017 in London, England.

Adding pace to his side should be high on Luhukay’s agenda and said desire could lead the Wednesday boss to Lee. The 29-year-old only made 10 appearances for Crystal Palace in 2017-18, but could be worth a gamble with his release by the Eagles anticipated this summer.
