This weekend, West Brom head to Sunderland for the 155th contest between the two sides. Let’s take a look back at five of their most memorable encounters.

West Brom 2-3 Sunderland (Division One – 30th April, 1977)
Sunderland were in desperate need of points in their battle for survival as these two sides met in the closing weeks of the season. Looking to avenge their 6-1 defeat in the reverse fixture, Albion fought back from behind twice with goals from Laurie Cunningham and David Cross. However, a Tony Towers penalty meant Jimmy Adamson’s Sunderland side left the Hawthorns with a vital win.
West Brom 3-3 Sunderland (Division One – 13th April, 1998)
West Brom and Sunderland contested another end of season cracker as 10-man Sunderland claimed a point at the Hawthorns. Lee Hughes and Kevin Kilbane put the Baggies into a two goal lead before Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips drew Peter Reid’s side level.
Michael Gray’s sending off didn’t stop Sunderland taking the lead through Niall Quinn but they couldn’t hold on and Lee Hughes netted a late equaliser for the Baggies.
Sunderland 0-1 West Brom (Division One – 18th April, 2004)
A dramatic 92nd minute winner all but confirmed West Brom’s promotion to the Premier League. Albion absorbed pressure for long spells of the game until Lloyd Dyer hit Sunderland on the counter attack and played through Jason Koumas to slot home an iconic winner.

Sunderland 2-3 West Brom (Premier League – 9th April, 2011)
Albion took a giant step towards Premier League survival with a thrilling win at the Stadium of Light. Both sides traded blows and Nicky Shorey’s own goal put Sunderland ahead before Odemwingie tapped home the equaliser. Phil Bardsley’s fantastic drive put Sunderland back into the lead but Albion came back strong in the second half. Goals from Youssouf Mulumbu and Paul Scharner saw Roy Hodgson’s side rise to 10th in the table.
Sunderland 2-4 West Brom (Premier League – 24th November, 2012)
West Brom recorded their fourth Premier League win on the bounce with an impressive victory over Martin O’Neill’s Sunderland side. A beautiful strike from Zoltan Gera put Albion ahead and Shane Long doubled their lead before half time. A Craig Gardner free-kick brought Sunderland back into the game but goals from Romelu Lukaku and Stephane Sessegnon sealed another three points for the Baggies.
