While Manchester United have enjoyed a much brighter time under Jose Mourinho, not every player in the squad has managed to make that positive a contribution.

With that in mind, here are five players who will arguably be disappointed with their form this season…

Chris Smalling

Chris Smalling has arguably been unable to replicate the form that possibly made him United’s best performing defender in recent years. His displays have often been overshadowed since the arrival of Eric Bailly.

Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw looked to be on his way to becoming a special left-back in the weeks leading up to his horrific injury last season, and it seems that he has just been unable to reach that same level since his return.

Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford was sensational last season so it could be argued that the weight of expectation is proving too heavy. He has scored three times this term, while also providing just one assist in the Premier League.

Anthony Martial

For many attackers who often do not play down the middle, a return of three goals and four assists in 14 appearances in the league would not look that bad. But for a £42.5 million player (via transfermarkt), that form is surely not good enough.

Wayne Rooney

The 2016/17 season may have been the one which saw Wayne Rooney become Manchester United’s all-time leading goalscorer, but his overall form has given Jose Mourinho little reason to reconsider his strategy of using him as more of a fringe player.
