Liverpool’s flying teenager Trent Kone-Doherty has been praised by his former Derry City youth coach Gerard Boyle.

Liverpool have a young talent with real ‘X factor’ having landed Irish prospect Trent Kone-Doherty in 2022.

That is the verdict of Kone-Doherty’s former youth coach Gerard Boyle, who has been speaking to the Liverpool Echo.

Kone-Doherty showed promise in the Derry City ranks and spent time on trial with Scottish giants Celtic back in 2020.

Liverpool pounced in 2022 though, securing a deal thought to be worth around £175,000 having been impressed with the youngster.

Kone-Doherty is only 17 but is making real strides in the Liverpool ranks.

The left winger has hit five goals in five Under-18 Premier League games this season whilst also adding two assists.

Kone-Doherty has started to feature in Premier League 2 games as well, scoring once in three outings.

Gerard Boyle, who coached Kone-Doherty in the Derry City youth ranks, has now hailed the teenager.

Boyle feels that Kone-Doherty has a real ‘X factor’ in his game whilst praising his work ethic in training.

Boyle adds that Kone-Doherty has a ‘superb athletic profile’, seemingly backing him to shine on Merseyside.

“I always thought he had an X factor about him that would ensure he could impress at any level,” said Boyle. “He was also always humble and hard working, so that was always going to stand him in good stead. Then add to that his superb athletic profile. However, training with the first team at the start of his second season is some going by any standards,” he added.

Liverpool have quite the stock of young attackers

Kone-Doherty may well become a first-team star in the future but Liverpool do have plenty of other options.

Bobby Clark is one of them having joined from Newcastle United and has already recorded three assists in four Premier League 2 games.

Then there is Ben Doak, who arrived from Celtic in 2022 and has already showed immense potential in the Liverpool ranks.

Add in Kaide Gordon as he returns from injury and Liverpool seem to have a set of attacking players who can make a big impact down the line with Kone-Doherty right in the mix.
