Stars from Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City feature on our list. Would they be on yours?
QPR’s Joey Barton and Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney are often causing controversy with their comments on the social networking site, but many footballers, like Michael Owen quite wisely choose to play it safe with their tweets. Who do we think would fall into the ‘Barton’ category, who we would love to see join up…
Mario Balotelli
We can’t run this list without including ‘Super Mario’. First off, through an official account, we would find out which stories about him are true. Every week there is a story about him handing out £50 notes in Manchester city centre, or setting off fireworks, some are true, some are not. This way we could find out the truth. It would also allow us even more insight into the Italian’s wacky personality. There are a number of fake Balotelli’s on Twitter of course, some mildly amusing, but none could match the real thing.
John Terry
Surely there could be nobody more topical than the former England captain, to sign up. Obviously right now he might have a few difficulties with his upcoming court case, but after its all over, we’d love to know what he thinks, even if we completely disagree with it. At present it does not seem right that big mouth Joey Barton can slag Terry off on Twitter, fully well knowing that Terry is not online to bite back. Would Barton be so vocal if Terry had a Twitter account, who knows, but we’d love to find out.
Carlos Tevez
We could get great tips for our golf swing if Tevez was on Twitter. Lets face it, the Argentine doesn’t have to concern himself with playing football at the moment or even going to training, so he has plenty of free time to waste away posting online. Joining up would at least allow him to put his side of the story across, and he could explain to his own supporters why he feels it is right to be on striker. One concern would be over his limited English, which may mean his tweets wouldn’t be the most eloquent, but then neither are Wayne Rooney’s.
Andy Carroll
Over the last 12 months Andy Carroll’s reputation has taken a bit of a battering. One way to get the public back onside would be to join up to Twitter, and explain how hard he is working to improve his game. Footballers often seem aloof from the paying support, but Carroll is a working class Geordie lad who would no doubt come across very well on Twitter, so what has he got to lose? Sure he will get criticism and banter coming his way, but it can’t be anything he hasn’t heard before surely.
Ryan Giggs
There is surely nobody more unlikely than Ryan Giggs to sign up to Twitter. Even though his name became synonymous with the social networking site last summer. That was because of a superinjunction he took out against model Imogen Thomas preventing him from being named as the second partner in their relationship. It failed as Twitter users rebelled and named him anyway, leading to an attention-seeking MP naming him in Parliament. It is probably a non-starter, but we’d love it to happen just because of all the history there.
Do you agree with our choices? Which players or managers would you like to see sign up?
