Could the young right-back follow in the footsteps of Gareth Bale, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott and Luke Shaw?
Southampton youngsters have certainly gone on to become big names recently – with Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain immediately springing to mind.
And in the starting line-up to todays game against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns they had four other academy graduates. Adam Lallana the leading man from the quartet whilst Luke Shaw and James Ward-Prowse will also be familiar names.
But what about Calum Chambers? Ever heard of him? Well if you haven’t, let us try and give you a little factfile on the player.
1) Chambers is a local lad, born in the Hampshire market town of Petersfield and has been at the Saints since a young age.
2) Despite lining up at right-back today, Chambers is in fact described as a creative midfielder with an excellent final product. However he has been used as a right-back by the first-team in pre-season.
3) Chambers has also played at youth level for England. The 18-year-old has played at both under-17 and under-19 level.
4) His good form in pre-season has seen him promoted permanently to the Southampton first-team as the understudy to Nathaniel Clyne at right-back. In light of that reward he has been given a new four-year contract in July.
5) The game with West Bromwich Albion will be his second appearance in the Southampton first-team. He came on in the 84th minute of a Carling Cup tie against Stevenage – assisting Ben Reeves with the fourth Saints goal of a 4-1 victory.
