The Ajax star has been likened to a young Wesley Sneijder- but does he prefer Barcelona?
Sir Alex Ferguson was reluctant to spend £30 million on a player who may have already peaked in Wesley Sneijder this summer. The rumour that he is willing to splash £25 million on Danish starlet Christian Eriksen is gaining momentum, but United will face competition for his signature.
Eriksen, Ajax’s number eight, is an attacking midfielder and still only 19.
Last year he played a key role in Ajax clinching the Dutch title, so will he soon be gracing our shores?
United have an Eriksen-shaped gap in their sometimes disjointed midfield, and he would fit the mould of talented, hungry young players that Ferguson has been cultivating.
Eriksen has recently spoken of his affection for Barcelona, but do the Spanish side have room for him?
Here are five facts about the youngster…
1) He is Danish football’s brightest hope, seen by many as a long-awaited successor to Michael Laudrup.
2) Eriksen was the youngest player to perform at World Cup 2010, featuring against Holland and Japan.
3) Before signing for Ajax, Eriksen had trials with Barcelona, AC Milan, and… Chelsea.
4) His admirers include Rio Ferdinand, who praised Eriksen on Twitter after England played Denmark, and none other than Dutch legend Johann Cruyff who saw to it that he was crowned Dutch Football Talent of the Year 2011.
5) He scored his second international goal against Scotland in August in a 1-1 draw.
