Teenage Liverpool striker Samed Yesil is in line for an early debut in the Europa League, Brendan Rodgers has confirmed. What can we tell you about him?

While the football world was focused on Liverpool’s embarrassingly unsuccessful attempts to sign Clint Dempsey, it could yet turn out all the criticism which came the club’s way was a tad unjustified.

Why? The answer is simple, shortly before deadline day, the club pulled of the low-key £1 million signing of Samed Yesil. It barely registered on the radar, but now he is line for a first team opportunity, the striker could just turn out to be the answer to the club’s current woes.

So while supporters wait with baited breath to see what he can do, here are five facts they need to know about the striker.

1) Yesil is a German striker of Turkish heritage, similar to Mesut Ozil, while Liverpool’s on-loan Nuri Sahin was also born in Germany, but plays for Turkey.

2) He was signed from Bayer Leverkusen, who Raheem Sterling scored for Liverpool against in pre-season in a 3-1 win, for £1 million, and is just 18 years old, born in May 1994.

3) Yesil made just one appearance for Leverkusen, in a 3-3 draw against Hertha Berlin in April, where he played the final 10 minutes as a substitute.

4) His appearances for Germany’s youth sides have spotlighted his goalscoring talents. He scored an impressive 19 goals in 21 matches for the German under-17 side.

5) Earlier this month he scored twice and provided one assist in Germany under-19’s 3-1 win over England under-19s. It was this performance which has tempted Brendan Rodgers to fast track him into the Liverpool first team squad.
