Sunderland announced the signing of Carlos Cuellar on a free transfer from Aston Villa yesterday.
What do you need to know about him?
1) Cuellar is 30 and was born in Madrid, but has not played in Spain since 2007 when he left Osasuna for Rangers.
2) His time at Rangers was a success, which saw him awarded the SPL Footballer of the year award for 2007-08.
3) Martin O’Neill paid £7.8 million to sign him for Aston Villa, and now he will link up with the manager for a second time at Sunderland.
4) He is a versatile defender who can play at left-back or at centre-back or right-back. Last season he made 18 starts for Villa, providing one assist.
5) Cuellar has experience of playing in both the Champions League and UEFA Cup with Osasuna, Rangers, and Villa, and will hope to earn a path European football with the Black Cats next season.
