Five Everton players whose contracts expire in summer 2017

Some Everton players in particular will be under pressure to perform this season or they could be without a club…

Gareth Barry, Arouna Kone, Conor McAleny, Tyias Browning and Gethin Jones are all players who have made at least one or more appearances for Everton’s first team.

They all also have one other thing in common: their contracts will expire in summer 2017. Out of the five players, whose contact is likely to be renewed and whose time at Goodison is likely to be up?

Gareth Barry

The most high-profile star on the list is Barry. Tthe midfielder has a regular starting place in Ronald Koeman’s side and has so far excelled this season as one of the Blues best players. Koeman even hailed Barry as “one of the best” he has ever managed.

At 35, Barry has not got age on his side. However, considering his fine form and current contribution to the side, it will be a surprise if Koeman does not offer Barry a one-year contract extension in the summer.

Arouna Kone

Kone’s three years at Everton has mostly been spent as Romelu Lukaku’s back-up. Kone has failed to fill the void for a reliable striker who can provide cover for Lukaku if necessary.

The Ivorian scored just five goals last season and at 32, the striker’s form is only going to get worse, this is likely to be Kone’s last season at Everton.

Conor McAleny

McAleny was stripped from his shirt number when they were released this summer. The striker has made just two appearances for Everton.

The 24-year-old has spent most of his career on loan. McAleny is clearly not in Koeman’s plans and looks set to be joining Kone on the list of free agents.

Tyias Browning

Browning is someone who was once tipped for big things at Everton. Unfortunately, things have not quite gone to plan for the defender.

He has suffered with injuries and has made just seven appearances for the club. With Mason Holgate ahead of Browning in the pecking order and Brendan Galloway likely to return to the squad following his loan move to West Brom, the 22-year-old is unlikely to be able to break back into the first team and is likely to go.

Gethin Jones

Gethin Jones made his debut in the 2014 Europa League game against Krasnodar, but he has not made another appearance since. The 21-year-old defender (who can also play in midfield) captains the Everton Under-23s and Wales Under-21s, but has got a lot to prove this season. If the youngster impresses then he could be offered a new contract.
