Derby County have enjoyed a revival under Steve McClaren; as have some of their players.
General view at Pride Park
Since Steve McClaren returned to Pride Park for his second spell in charge of Derby County, the Rams have enjoyed one hell of a revival. Stuck in 20th place under Nigel Pearson, Derby County have climbed the table and are now pushing desperately for a place in the play-offs.
And despite Derby County hitting a rocky patch of late, after defeats to Cardiff City and a 3-3 draw with Bristol City, the Rams are still very much in the hunt for promotion. Whether they make it or not, the turnaround under Steve McClaren has been remarkable.
With many of Derby County’s players looking noticeably better since McClaren’s return, HITC Sport has compiled a list of the top five performers for the Rams this season. But did we get it right? Is there anyone we’ve missed? Here’s a look at our picks…
1. Scott Carson
Derby’s Scott Carson
The former England goalkeeper has been in exceptional form for the Rams this season, and has played a major part in them becoming one of the best defensive teams in the division. At the age of just 31, Carson still has plenty of playing years left in him, and could be vital in the Rams’ promotion bid.
2. Richard Keogh
Derby’s Richard Keogh
Recently marking 100 consecutive appearances for Derby County, Captain Richard Keogh has again showed his class under Steve McClaren. The central defender, who managed to make that impressive appearance run under six different manager’s tenures, offers pace, leadership and excellent distribution.
3. Will Hughes
Derby’s Will Hughes
The maestro at the centre of Derby’s midfield, Will Hughes is surely destined for great things in the game. At the age of just 21, Will Hughes has made over 150 appearances for the Rams, and is arguably Derby’s best player, and one of the best centre midfield players in the division. He’ll want to be playing Premier League football sooner or later, but will it be with Derby?
4. Tom Ince
Derby’s Tom Ince
Scoring 12 goals for the Rams this season, Tom Ince has been in fine form since Steve McClaren’s return to Pride Park. The winger, who loves to cut inside from the right and hit one with his left foot, has been outshining Derby County’s other attacking players this season, and is once again staking a claim that he should be playing at a higher level.
5. Darren Bent
Darren Bent celebrates
Seven goals in his last six games and 12 goals in total for the season so far, Darren Bent has really done the business for Steve McClaren this season. The 32-year-old striker has done a fine job of standing in for on-loan striker Chris Martin, who the club wanted to bring back in January, and is proving that he is still a natural goalscorer.
