Dwight Gayle was the talk of the town after his incredible hat-trick against Norwich, but Jonjo Shelvey’s performance was almost just as impressive as he helped the Magpies complete an astonishing comeback.

The midfielder was at the centre of all things good about Newcastle, and the stats show just how big an impact he had on the game against the Canaries.

Only Paul Dummett touched the ball more times than Shelvey, but it’s fair to say that the times Shelvey got on the ball had a much bigger impact on the game than the left back’s efforts.

Dummett also had the same number of forward passes, but it is the chances created stat where Shelvey stands out among the rest.

The England international created five chances for the Magpies, setting up Gayle’s second goal, as well as providing other passes for the striker, where Gayle squandered the opportunity.

Shelvey also played a big part in Newcastle’s winner, with his long pass up to Mitrovic falling to Gayle who finished neatly to give Benitez’s men all three points.

Newcastle’s number 12 also did the dirty side of the game, winning six duels, with only the combative Alexander Tettey winning more from central midfield.

Shelvey is arguably the most important cog in the Newcastle machine right now; when he plays well, so do the rest of the time. His imagination with the ball and range of passing are creating countless chances for his forwards.

If Shelvey can add the consistency to his game, Newcastle could go on a great run and dominate the Championship.
