Aston Villa have spent big this season, and despite some poor results, there are a few players who will have impressed fans this season.
It’s been a disappointing season so far for Aston Villa fans, as the club currently sit 19 points away from the play-off places. After spending millions in both the summer and in January, Villa fans would be hoping that the club would be pushing for at least the play-offs, if not automatic promotion. However, a poor start under Roberto Di Matteo, followed by a horrendous run under Steve Bruce, which includes not picking up a win since Boxing Day, leaves Aston Villa well off the pace.
But it’s not all doom in gloom. Should Aston Villa stay down this season, which it looks like they will, Steve Bruce will have arguably one of the best squads in the Championship at his disposal next season. So which players have impressed Villa fans the most this season? HITC Sport have compiled a list of five contenders, but did we get it right?
1. Jonathan Kodjia

The Ivorian striker hasn’t disappointed since joining Aston Villa from Bristol City in the summer. Scoring 11 goals so far, Kodjia is currently the Villans’ leading goal-scorer, and his darting runs and pace have been great to watch at Villa Park so far this season. Now partnered by former Brentford striker Scott Hogan, more goals are expected to come from Jonathan Kodjia this season.
2. Albert Adomah

Signed from Middlesbrough in the summer, Albert Adomah has looked bright for the Villans this season. Chipping in with three goals from the wing, Adomah’s power and pace is excellent in the Championship, and many Villa fans feel the wide-man should be getting more game time under Steve Bruce.
3. Jack Grealish
Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish
A proper Villa boy, Jack Grealish has done well under Steve Bruce. The winger, who many still believe could play for England one day, has scored three goals for Villa so far this season and looks to be improving week in, week out. With Conor Hourihane and Henri Lansbury now joining him in midfield, Jack Grealish could well benefit from Villa’s extra service.
4. James Chester
Aston Villa’s James Chester
Taking the captain’s armband, James Chester has been excellent for Aston Villa this season. The central defender, who is good in both the air and with the ball at his feet, has been a rocky in an otherwise shaky defence for the Villans this season, and his distribution to the midfield has been superb. A leader, as well as one of their best players, Steve Bruce will be wanting to build a team around Chester for next season.
5. Jordan Amavi

Despite struggling recently, Jordan Amavi has been one of Villa’s better defenders this season. Pacy, strong and equipped with a quality crossing ability, Amavi is one of the players who could most likely make the step up to the Premier League, when and if Aston Villa are promoted. The Frenchman has been linked with a number of big clubs across the continent since Villa went down, but he is remaining at Villa Park until at least the end of the season.
